Chicken or fish? Jessica Simpson will never be accused of being a genius. But her reputation, she says, is just a result of bad publicity and gossip. "I don't know what your perception is of Jessica Simpson or what tabloid you buy, but I just want you to know that I'm just a girl from Texas. I'm just like you. I'm doing what I love and dating a boy." Jessica's homely roots tell half the story. Born in Abilene, Texas in 1980 to a minister and a stay-at-home mom, Jessica's early career was nothing more than singing at the local church. At age twelve, she failed her auditon for the The Micky Mouse Club (which launched the careers of other stars of her generation, like Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears). Even when she landed a recording deal with a minor gospel label, the company went bankrupt before her album could be produced.

Later, Jessica will say that this was a very difficult time for her, personally and professionally. But she didn't want to give up. She kept giving concerts, singing wherever people would have her, and eventually her persistence paid off - Columbia Records approached her about a deal. She dropped out of high school at sixteen to pursue her career. It's okay, they don't teach you about tuna anyway. Under Columbia, Jessica found worldwide success with the release of three singles and an album. Her music sales surpassed 4 million worldwide. She toured with her contemporaries Ricky Martin and 98 Degrees, the latter of which introduced her to her future husband, Nick Lachey. In 2003, she and Nick starred in a reality show called "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica." It was during this show that Jessica gained her notorious reputation. She made bank on the image of a ditzy, airheaded blonde - not knowing what meat tuna is, thinking buffalo wings came from real buffalo, and reportedly telling the White House Interior Secretary that he "did a really good job decorating the White House."

Laugh all you want, but her antics made her a household name while her records continued to climb the charts. The world couldn't get enough of Jessica Simpson. She branched out to acting in the next few years, though her movies debuted only to modest success. After her show ended and she divorced from Nick Lachey in 2005, her popularity was never quite the same. She endured controversy for her sexy remake of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", and a stint of bad luck gave life to what became known as "The Jessica Curse." Whenever she appeared for a concert or promotional event, something would go wrong - flubbed lines, bad weather, or a difficult crowd. Her music was booed at the Country Thunder Festival, and Dallas Cowboys fans resented her for dating their quarterback Tony Romo, blaming her influence for his sudden nosedive in game performance.

In 2008, President Bush was quoted as saying, "We're going to send Jessica Simpson to the Democrat National Convention." You know it's bad when *George Bush* can find a way to mock you. Jessica's romantic relationships have also been somewhat tumultuous. She's been linked with everyone from Dane Cook (comedian) to Adam Levine (singer) to John Mayer (professional whiner). For a long time, it seemed none of her boy-toys would last. This appears to be changing with her newest beau, Eric Johnson - they've been dating all year and have recently announced their engagement. Change seems to be on the horizon for Jessica on all fronts. She's made an effort to bounce back from her troubles, ditching the skimpy outfits that caused so much backlash and becoming involved in another reality show - this time from behind the scenes as a producer. She's also launched her own fashion line, the Jessica Simpson Collection. She's expressed her intention to ditch the ditzy image, instead focusing on more adult, intellectual movies and maturing her sound through country music instead of tween pop. No matter what life throws at her, Jessica is sure to take it in stride. This is the girl who went from church choirs to double platinum with nothing more than a smile and sheer determination. When it comes to pushing through hardship, Jessica Simpson is a bull with horns... or would that be a tiger with horns? Or maybe a fish with horns...
