Angelina Jolie has not lived the typical life of your average celebrity. In her thirty five years she has been everything from an emotionally unstable cutter to a world-renowned humanitarian and hero; she has been judged by many as a seductress, while others see her as a saint. She is a woman that does not do anything half way. When she commits to something, she pours her whole self and heart into it, until she has either had enough or the thing she has committed to fails. This is the pattern her entire life has followed and this may be the reason she is often seen as a contradiction. Her penchant for devoting so much of herself to her choices has a tendency to make her seem less devoted, flighty, and unable to maintain a commitment. In reality, however, she simply follows the path that her beliefs set her on. When that path changes, so does her commitment. Because she seems to be a glaring contradiction, it is often wondered how she managed t o create the life she has now as the successful humanitarian, when the early years of her life were filled with so much turmoil. The answer to the question is simple; she found purpose. When purpose takes hold of a life, the life changes, and it usually changes for the better.

Angelina Jolie started life as Angelina Jolie Voight, daughter of Jon Voight. Jon Voight, a director, the movie industry was always part of her life, but not something she made the conscious choice to join until her pre-teen years. Her parents split when she was very young and the fatherless family moved often. After moving to Los Angeles, Jolie made the decision to become an actress. As with many people in the pre-teen, teenage years, Jolie's self-esteem began to drop, for a number of reasons. Her mother was not rich and Jolie had an awkward period where she had braces and her features didn't quite seem to fit her face. This resulted in teasing. She also tried modeling, but failed often, which drove her confidence level even lower. Within a couple of years her self-image had fallen to the point where she didn't care about her life and self, and she began the habit of cutting.
Around this same time Jolie became extremely interested in death, blood, and sex, and harbored thoughts of suicide. For the next decade these dark notions would be a part of her life, though they would slowly improve. Eventually her acting and modeling career began to move forward, especially as she lost her awkward teenage looks and began taking on the exotic looks that define her now. As these things grew, so did her confidence. She met her first husband, Johnny Lee Miller, when she took an acting role in a production with him. When she married him she had his name written in her blood across the back of her white shirt. This marriage failed and she eventually moved on and married Billy Bob Thornton (star of Sling Blade). The two wore vials of each other’s blood around their necks, until that marriage also dissolved.
While she was married to Billy Bob Thornton she visited Cambodia for a movie shoot. Shortly after Angelina became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations and she and Billy Bob Thornton adopted a Cambodian child, her first child, Maddox. It was around this time that her life began moving away from her obsession with death, darkness, and blood to the more productive avenues of motherhood and the humanitarian work she has devoted herself to. These two choices gave her a sense of purpose, of direction. Now, rather than floating through life searching for meaning, she had something she could happily devote herself to. Before this time her ability to commit to her choices completely had kept her walking a dangerous, meaningless path. With a sense of purpose, that direction soon changed.
While traveling, before she became an ambassador and during this time, she discovered that she had the ability to do an incredible amount of good for an incredible amount of people. Again, this gave her purpose. As a Good Will Ambassador Jolie visited numerous third world countries and donated millions of dollars to helping them. Her life seemed to be on the right track. The contradictions emerged again, however, when she was linked to Brad Pitt after starring in a film with him. Here she was, Good Will Ambassador, helping countless amounts of people, doing all this good, while simultaneously destroying marriages. At least, that's how it looked to the rest of the world.
Pitt and Jolie hit it off on the set of their movie. Shortly after, he and his wife Jennifer Aniston divorced. For the next year the two had a hush relationship, but eventually emerged as a couple. Angelina Jolie adopted another child, her daughter Zahara. At the same time Brad Pitt legally adopted both children. The next child to follow was Shiloh, the biological daughter of Jolie and Pitt. Within two years they had adopted another child, Pax, and Jolie gave birth to a set of twins, Knox and Vivienne. She is now the mother of six, three biological children, all children of Brad Pitt, and three adopted.
In December 2009, the National Equirer published a report that Jolie attempted suicide. According to the article: Angelina was in Los Angeles with the kids when she called him in a panic," a friend divulged.
"She told him, 'When you're not around, I get these terrible feelings. I got the same feelings when I was younger, and that's when I tried to kill myself.'
Since becoming a major humanitarian Angelina Jolie has continued her acting career but her efforts are moving more and more toward humanitarian work and simply being a mom. Acting has taken a back seat to the aspects of her life which have given her purpose. As is her personality, she has devoted herself entirely to the path she has chosen, that of a humanitarian and mother. Brad Pitt has joined her in her humanitarian efforts. The two of them have set up a charity dedicated to humanitarian work. At this point Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are still going strong as a couple and as a family. Only the future can tell whether Jolie's path will change, sending her down a new road, giving her new commitments, and altering her purpose. For now, however, the work that gives her purpose, the work that has moved her from the darker aspects of her past, is the work that drives her forward.
